WHEN BEING A MINISTER CAN BE A BAD THING

by Bob Walsh

Kristen Biel was a 5th grade teacher at a Catholic school in the formerly great state of California. She came down with cancer and the school fired her happy ass. She sued. A court said that since her curriculum included religious instruction she was in effect a minister and the courts have no say-so over the relationship between a church and it's ministers.

On Monday a federal appeals court threw out this judgement and allowed Ms. Biel's suit to proceed. They said that teaching religion does not necessarily make someone a minister and that religious freedom "does not provide carte blanche to disregard antidiscrimination laws."

Ms. Biel was a full-time teacher at the St. James Catholic School in Torrance, CA. and received positive job performance reports. After she told the school she needed some time off for chemo they started giving her crappy performance reviews and refused to renew her contract.

The principle that fired her has recently retired after being charged with embezzlement of over $500,000 from the school in cahoots with another nun.

The lord moves in mysterious ways...….
