Christians Are A Pack Of Thieves
by Bob Walsh
The Winter Solstice rapidly approaches. I thought I would take a few moments to address the Christian cooption of Yule.
There is a long history of saviors and the Winter Solstice. Mithra, Hercules and Osiris are but a few of many. These saviors are always born on or near the Winter Solstice. This is when the light overtakes the darkness. The Solstice is the shortest day and longest night of the year. It is very symbolic. These saviors had humble birth, almost always in a cave, stable or something of that nature. Their parentage was always miraculous or murky or both. The led a life of toil for the betterment of mankind. They underwent a journey, either actual or metaphorical, into the underworld and returned.
The early Christians were not stupid men. They knew that if they stole the peasants holidays from them they would have issues with the peasants, who could make life awkward for them. So they absorbed the Pagan holidays into the Christian calendar.
We really don't mind. Pagans are very easy going about such things. It would, however, be nice if we got credit for it.
HAPPY YULE to one and all.
