The police hunt for a laughing attacker in Boyle Heights who shot a 10-year-old girl by mistake will be stepped up by outraged authorities Thursday when they unveil a $50,000 reward.
The reward will be announced to the public at noon at a news conference at the LAPD’s Hollenbeck Station. City Councilman Jose Huizar, LAPD Deputy Chief Robert Arcos and investigating detectives are expected to attend, along with family members of the victim.
A man on a bicycle was the intended target in the shooting about 6 p.m. on June 10 near the intersection of Rogers Avenue and Chicago Street, according to Officer Mike Lopez of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Media Relations Section.
The girl, who survived after surgery, and her sister were waiting to cross a street when a passenger in the suspect vehicle opened fire on the intended victim. That intended target on a bicycle near the girls was not harmed, police said.
The wounded girl collapsed and laughter was heard coming from the car as it left the scene, according to the LAPD.
The victim was taken to a hospital and underwent surgery.
