BURKE COUNTY, Georgia -- A Burke County Sheriff’s Office deputy was sent to the hospital after being attacked by a wild fox.

Deputies were called to the 800 block of River Creek Road shortly after 2 p.m. Monday after receiving a report that a wild fox was acting strangely near NextEra Energy. The fox then approached the complainant and bit him on the leg, according to Chief Deputy Lewis Blanchard.

The fox approached Deputy Misty May and she used a spray to try and subdue the animal but the fox became agitated and attacked, biting her in the leg and thigh. Lt. Willie Burley and Deputy Gary Jenkins assisted in getting the fox away from May before killing the animal.

The fox has been sent off to test for rabies and May was transported to the Burke County Hospital for treatment.
