Superintendent Rock Beene closed an entire school district down earlier this week in Oklahoma over threats made, apparently by parents, against as 12-year old, 7th grade student. The student is physically male but self-identifies as female and uses the girls bathrooms. She was allegedly peeping over the top of bathroom stalls in the girls john.
A lot of nasty hate items appeared on the schools Facebook. Some of them were outright threats of violence.
The superintendent closed both the K-8 and the high school in the district at the specific request of local law enforcement.
Some of the parents may be prosecuted for their posts. There is a restraining order against one of them for a specific threat of violence.
The Facebook page in question is NOT a formal part of the school media presence.
I can see why the parents feel uneasy. It will get worse when the student gets into high school and (presumably) has to dress out for gym class. Nevertheless, making threats of violence is stupid, illegal and not helpful to the dialog.
