The last few days the legislature of the formerly great state of California has been jacking up the head of the DMV for interminable lines in the offices, slow processing and generally pissing off the voters. In the course of those hearings a deep, dark secret came out.
I knew about this back in the 1970s, when I worked for DMV. It has been around a long time. There is a SECRET DMV office behind a locked, unmarked door in the state capitol. They cater to elected officials and their staffers. IN THEORY they are mostly an information provider but if you want to renew your drivers license or do the paperwork for your kids new car, they do that too.
At least one of the main Sacramento TV stations had a piece on this last night. I wonder if it will now close? (No, I don't wonder. It won't.) They will ride the heat, pretend it provides tech information to legislators and staffers, and keep doing what they have been doing for at least 50 years. God forbid one of our political ruling class should actually have to wait in line with the peasants at the DMV.
