We Don't Pay Cops To Be Stupid

It seems that, during a class photo at the West Virginia Correctional Officer's Academy a number of the cadets thought it would be amusing to give a Nazi salute for the photograph.
Corrections and Rehabilitation Training Class #18, which ran during October and November, showed a number of the cadets giving the salute with the caption HAIL BYRD, in reference to instructor Karrie Byrd.
Several of the cadets asserted that they did not give the salute until ordered to by Byrd. Some did so with a clenched fist rather than an open hand. Some said they feared discharge or other retaliation if they refused to go along with the program.
Several of the cadets have been sacked. Several of the instructors are on leave pending likely discharge, including some of who knew about the incident but failed to report it. The photograph has been released to the public.
