Florida police department is blasted online for naming their newest K-9 recruit after the infamous Nazi general Erwin Rommel

A Florida police department were forced to rename their newest four-legged recruit on Friday morning, having accidentally originally named the K-9 after an infamous Nazi general.

Lake County Sheriff’s Office proudly announced the debut of their new 10-week-old bloodhound puppy, called Rommel, on Friday, ahead of his journey in assisting officer’s in their search for missing persons and fugitives.

‘Meet LCSO's newest Bloodhound, Rommel,’ the department tweeted.

‘He is a 10 week old liver colored bloodhound now assigned to Master Deputy Meintzschel. Rommel will soon begin his rigorous training to support the community by locating missing persons, fugitives, and evidence. Welcome aboard Rommel!’

Police say the dog was given the name as a tribute to one of Deputy Mark Meintzschel’s childhood pets.

However, despite the adorable photo, the oblivious deputies were soon inundated with messages of contempt from the public who were quick to point out the dog’s unsavory name.

‘Cute dog,’ said Helene McCarthy in response. ‘Too bad he got named for a Nazi hero. I find that offensive to me and the dog. We have plenty of American heroes this fine animal could be named after.’

Erwin Rommel, who many associated the dog’s name with, was a German general who acted as a field marshal for the Wehrmacht in North Africa during World War II.

Nicknamed 'Desert Fox', he previously served in Hitler's personal escort battalion, accompanying the fascist dictator wherever he traveled.

But despite at one time being considered one of Hitler's favorite generals, Erwin was was ordered to commit suicide in 1944, after the Nazi party accused him of mobilizing an attempt to assassinate the leader.

The Nazi propaganda machine initially reported that Erwin had died in a hail of gunfire during battle, but the true nature of his death was revealed after the war.

‘That’s a real “educated” police force you have there, Mein Fuher,’ added Daniel Sweebe.

Just hours later the police department returned to social media to reveal the bloodhound’s name had changed, following the backlash.

‘[Meintzschel] just learned that the name was tied to a Nazi war criminal,’ an updated Facebook post claimed.

‘That being said, knowing that this four-legged public servant belongs to the taxpayers of Lake County and his sensitivity to our Veterans, he immediately renamed him Scout.’

Despite the name change, the police force continued to receive sarcastic comments about their choice of moniker.

'Scout is offensive to native Americans,' wrote Thad Benton. 'Maybe try a name like 'Adolf' or 'Zimmerman' next.'

EDITOR’S NOTE: Those who condemn the Lake County SO for naming the dog after Rommel are ignorant bastards who know little of history. Erwin Rommel was a brilliant military tactician who did not participate in the Nazi atrocities. Most historians do not consider Rommel to have been a war criminal.

And fuck Thad Benton. My father’s name was Adolph. He fought in the Kaiser’s army and was wounded while fighting in Poland. After his release from a hospital, he was sent to the western front where he served until the end of WW1. I am proud of my father and his name. (Adolf and Adolph are one and the same with Adolph being an alternative spelling.)

Shame on the Lake County SO for caving in to a bunch of ignorant bastards.
