At least 19 children are killed or injured by gunfire each day in the US, a new report has found.
Research carried out by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that each year around 1,300 young people under 17 die, and 6,000 are injured, by guns.
And black teenagers are disproportionately affected by gun violence, the study found. Researchers have branded the situation a public health crisis. The suicide rate increased by 60 per cent between 2007 and 2014, according to the research, published today in the journal Pediatric
Across the US the annual death rate is just under two of every 100,000 children, with this figure doubling for black youngsters.
The suicide rate increased by 60 per cent between 2007 and 2014, according to the research, published today in the journal Pediatrics.
Researchers discovered that the majority of unintended deaths result from people playing with guns and accidentally pulling the trigger.
More than four out of ten of these cases saw young people unintentionally shoot themselves.
Researchers looked at data from death certificates and hospitals from 2002 through 2014.
Most deaths result from homicides and suicides, while assaults caused most of the nonfatal injuries.
Lead author Katherine Fowler of the CDC says that such research 'is fundamental for understanding the problem and developing scientifically sound solutions'.
EDITOR’S NOTE: The solution is simple. Parents must make certain their children do not have any access to their guns.
