California Senate Bill 54 would have, if approved in its original wording, essentially made the formerly great state of California a dejure as well as defacto sanctuary for illegal aliens, including illegal alien criminals, of all stripes.
No matter what the reason, it seems that it is barely possible the legislature had an attack of good sense.
A few days after the small California republican state minority and the State Sheriff's Association went ballistic on it the bill has been reworked in committee. The amendment, announced by Kevin de Leon, the author of the bill, would require that the authorities notified the FBI (not ICE) before releasing illegal aliens with a history of "violent felonies."
This change came after the Republicans complained that the current bill protected "rapists, murderers, armed robbers and serial drunk drivers."
