A man is fighting for his life after his arm was bitten off by a crocodile while he was relieving himself in a lagoon in Mexico.

Cal Monzon, 40, who is believed to be an American tourist, was reportedly urinating in the Nichupte Lagoon in Cancun.

As he was relieving himself the crocodile swam out of the water and bit his forearm off at the elbow, according to the Riviera Maya News.

After a struggle with the reptile Monzon managed to escape and run away.

Monzon, who was staying at the Rui Peninsula, was then rushed to a local hospital where he underwent emergency surgery.

According to the Riviera News, Monzon is in critical condition and fighting for his life.

The Nichupte Lagoon in Cancun is a tourist hotspot in the southeastern Mexican state of Quintana Roo.

According to local media, the Nichupte lagoon is known for its crocodile-infested waters.

Earlier this month, area businesses and residents expressed concern over the reptiles leaving the lagoon and entering restaurant and hotel areas.

Gonzalo Merediz Alonso, the executive director of Friends of Sian Ka'an, told the Riviera News that the crocodiles need to be removed from the lagoon and into a closure.

About 120 crocodiles live in the lagoon, a number that has grown substantially over the years.
