Santa Rita is the Alameda County, CA. jail. It is relatively large, with over 2,000 guests of the people there at any one time. They have one less than they did before.
Jail deputies responded to a "man down" call on Tuesday in the max custody housing unit and found a 56-year old prisoner down. When they opened the cell up his 73-year old cellie bolted from the cell and had to be tackled.
The now-dead guy had died shortly after being discovered. The geezer, who had only been there five days, was moved to a single cell. Probably a good move there.
The dead guy had been in custody since January and was locked up for suspicion of ADW. He was awaiting a move to a mental health facility. The not-dead guy was being held on suspicion of battery and making threats.
This is the first homicide at the jail in eight years. No names have been released pending notification of NOK.
