Escaped Mississippi murder suspect shot dead by hostages he took

On March 2, capital murder suspect Rafael McCloud, 34, escaped from the Warren County jail in Vicksburg, Mississippi by overcoming an officer with a homemade shank. McCloud had been jailed since June 29, 2015 for the rape and murder of a 69-year-old woman.
McCloud managed to stay out of sight until around 4 a.m. Thursday, when he attacked a 30-year-old man with a knife in the garage of his home. He forced the man, his wife and their 5-year-old son, who had just arrived at their home, inside the house. He took the family into a bathroom where he tied up the man. After more than two hours, for some reason he allowed the wife to leave. She returned with a gun and popped McCloud with one shot.
The wife freed her husband who took the gun and promptly pumped several more rounds into the fallen hostage taker. The family then rushed outside where they got a motorist to call 911. When the cops arrived at 7:15 a.m., they found poor old McCloud croaked in the bathtub with multiple gunshot wounds.
During the initial struggle in the garage, McCloud stabbed the husband in the shoulder. He was hospitalized in stable condition.
Fortunately this did not occur in California. In that state, the homeowner would have been arrested and charged with the murder of the hostage taker.
