New York Congressman Ritchie Torres has been an outspoken friend of Israel. During his visit to Israel earlier this month, JNS asked Torres about the reaction back home to his staunch support of Israel. Here is what he told JNS:
“There’s no issue on which I face more hate, harassment and death threats than on the subject of Israel. I’ve had my office repeatedly vandalized. I’ve been the target of heckling and protests and disruptions. But I’m willing to stand up for what I think is right, even if it means facing criticism and ostracism. Even if it means facing intimidation and harassment. I believe deeply in Israel, in Israel’s right to defend itself, especially in the wake of Oct. 7.”
Torres, a Democrat. was a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, but because of its hatred for Israel, he left that group sometime between December and January.
When Hamas rejected the latest ceasefire proposal on Monday, Torres wrote:
“The hyperbolic and hysterical demonization of Israel—from fair-weather friends—makes Hamas feel emboldened to continue rejecting ceasefires and continue holding the hostages captive. Sinwar feels like he is winning.”
That pretty well sums it up.
Israel's fair-weather friends like Biden have undermined the Jewish state to the point where Hamas believes it will end up victorious in the war.
It's sad that Israel has few true friends like Ritchie Torres.
