Trump’s Secretary of Commerce nominee said the government intends to put the offshore call centers out of business by paying America’s tech companies and other businesses to offer crash training courses to unemployed Americans
During his Senate confirmation hearing on Thursday, Trump’s pick for Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross said he will bring back the thousands of jobs lost when American companies outsourced those jobs to call centers in India and the Philippines.
Ross said that in addition to dealing with illegal immigration, saving and bringing back American jobs would be one of the Trump administration’s highest priorities.
According to Ross, there are dozens of call centers in India and nearly as many in the Philippines, each employing hundreds of local people answering questions posed by Americans. “We intend to put those offshore call centers out of business and bring those jobs back to this country. And that will be thousands of jobs.”
An irate Sen. Bernie Sanders said, “Wilbur, don’t bullshit us! Where are you going to find Americans qualified to fill those jobs. Our high school graduates can barely read and write. They don’t have the technical wherewithal to answer any of those questions and college graduates are sure as hell not going to take a low-paying job in a call center.
Ross said the government would pay America’s tech companies and other businesses to offer crash training courses to unemployed Americans.
A combative Sen. Elizabeth Warren said she would rather see some of the 11 million undocumented workers get that training. “At least that way they can get better jobs than mowing lawns or working in car washes.”
Ross replied, “Well that’s not exactly what Mr. Trump has in mind for fixing the illegal immigration problem.”
At that point the committee recessed for lunch.
